I am king of these tortured lands
I ruined them -- I made them die
Amidst the wastes my castle stands
"Bring precious ores," were my demands,
"Level mountains where treasures lie"
I am king of these tortured lands
My subjects toiled on my commands
They obeyed me -- I know not why
Amidst the wastes my castle stands
Where forests stood now sift cold sands
All the rivers and lakes are dry
I am king of these tortured lands
Far the desolation expands
Lone I suffer, repent, and cry
Amidst the wastes my castle stands
A knight quests here and understands:
You cannot help me, you say goodbye
I am king of these tortured lands
Amidst the wastes my castle stands

A villanelle about the Fisher King. I've been wanting to write a longer work about the Fisher King, Percival, and the Grail quest for a few years. I never got around to doing that, but here is a little verse just to sketch out my ideas for it.
